Key to the Apoidea: boy or girl?

Many of the characters listed in the key require determination of the sex of the specimen. Here is an illustrated guide of how to determine if your specimen is a male or female. Remember to always check the exceptions.



Male: (13 antennal segments, 7 exposed terga, does not posess a sting)


13 antennal segments (includes scape and pedicel) (close up)

Female: (11 or 12 antennal segments, less than 7 exposed terga, posess a sting)


11 antennal segments (including scape and pedicel) (close up) less than seven (close up)
